The following is the official announcement for John Intoppa's campaign in 2019
Hello! My name is John Intoppa and I would like to take this moment to formally announce my campaign for Medford School Committee this coming November!
I have lived in Medford all of my 18 years. In addition, my parents have lived their whole lives in Medford as well. I attended the Columbus Elementary School, the Andrews Middle School and I just recently graduated from Medford High School earlier this month. I was apart of the Medford Public Schools orchestra for eight years, the drama program(s) for a combination of five years, and the rowing program for six years. Here is a list of some of the things I have achieved over the past years within the Medford Public Schools System:
MHS Citizen of the year 2019
Senior Class President of the Class of 2019
M Club Unsung Hero Award (Spring Crew)
Michael McGlynn Award (Crew)
Medford High Representative at Student Government Day
National (and Junior) Honor Society Member
SITE Council Member
While, I feel, the current committee is doing a phenomenal job recognizing the accomplishments and actions of the students here in Medford, I feel by joining the school committee, I can add a fresh perspective to what's going on in the schools since I've just gone through them. With my experiences in multiple art programs, athletics, and Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility program, I have a vast knowledge of what actually goes on behind the scenes in certain aspects.
Communication: My hope is to strengthen the communication between the committee and the connections I have with Medford High and the other public schools to get a broader understanding of what goes on.
Initiative: My platform when running for class president was to make sure student activities were affordable for all students. I wanted to make sure that everyone could enjoy their senior year no matter their financial situation. We fundraised and shopped around to get the best prices for anything we had control over. Also, when it came to the year end events, I wanted to make sure to support local business. Some of my tasks as president were to assist in figuring out caterers for our breakfast and cookout. In doing so, I was able to recruit Jim's Market and Carroll's Restaurant: two Medford based restaurants. While it may seem small to some - in doing so Medford High School was able to support two well known businesses within the city and I hope to make sure more of that happens - strengthening the connection between schools and surrounding businesses.
Social Responsibility: If being a part of the Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility (CCSR) taught me anything - it was how to approach local government officials and figure out how to get involved. I worked with the Mayor's office especially during my CCSR project last year which was to make more little libraries for the city. I believe the connection between our students and our local government are constantly strengthening and by being a part of the committee, I aim to do just that.
Having two siblings: one an upcoming junior at the High School and the other an upcoming third grader at the Roberts, I strive to make the system better for not only them, but fellow classmates and students as well.
I want to thank you for your time in reading all of this and I hope to have your consideration in the upcoming election!
