My time in the MHS Drama Club was short lived, but one crazy journey for sure.
I joined the drama club during the fall of my junior year. The year prior I had been the magic consultant for their production of "Pippin" in 2017.
One thing the drama club taught me was perseverance. I was told that the fall play was hard to get into as it is usually such a small cast, especially as a first time junior. I had a few friends tell me otherwise, and split in the middle I decided to audition. I would go on to gratefully receive the lead role as Sheridan Whiteside in "The Man Who Came to Dinner" in 2017. The experiences I had and memories that were created truly made me fall in love with the program.
Another trait the drama club taught me was confidence. After the fall play (in the winter season), the drama club participates in "Drama Fest", a one act play competition. With only one high school production under my belt as an actor, the confidence that the drama club gave me pushed me to audition and fortunately land the lead role as Eli in "Fighting Demons" in 2018.
I would later go on to perform in two more shows my senior year "Almost, Maine" (Fall) and "Fancy Me Mad" (Drama Fest).
A great thing about "Fancy Me Mad" was that it was student written by a Medford High (at the time) senior, sophomore, and freshman. That show was a show I will forever miss and push for those students to publish it so other schools can be fortunate enough to perform it.
I would close my senior year with the drama club as props master / stage crew in their production of "Fame".
The drama club must live on within not only the high school, but middle schools alike. The environment within the club and benefits it brings to the community is unmatched.
