As the election approaches, I constantly find myself reflecting on what more could we benefit from in the Medford Public Schools that many individuals wished were integrated within the schools.
1. The introduction of ALICE. ALICE (also known as Act, Lock down, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) is a protocol used in case of an intruder inside the building. This would replace the traditional "stay in place" protocol that is currently being followed within the Medford Public Schools. It "makes it so that students, faculty, and staff are better prepared for a situation in which they may need to defend themselves. Our current protocol does NOT train our students, faculty, and staff to know what to do in case the intruder manages to make it into the classroom. While morbid to think, and maybe deemed unnecessary by some, it is always better to be prepared. 2. Speaking to a few Medford residents this past week, some were concerned that the Medford Public Schools does not have an "Adapted Physical Education" course. This physical education class is used to help those with certain needs and disabilities. This can help aid in the development of key motor functions through specially designed physical education classes for those who need it. I would like to see this change and have it added into the current curriculum. Many public schools systems have adapted this already including (but not limited to):
- Malden Public Schools:

- Stoneham Public Schools:

3. Another idea I had is adding a class, whether an elective or health class, to teach students the basics of life during and after high school. This includes (but not limited to): writing a check, paying a bill, writing a resume, opening a bank account, working on a budget, etc. If we could have a class that resembles our "Credit for Life" fair (that takes place in the high school), it would make all the difference. I know I wish I had this class when I was in high school, as I learned how to open a bank account and write a check - by running for school committee.
Thank you again for your time! Please, as always, feel free to share my posts to get the word out! Do not hesitate to send me a private message, comment, or send me an email at [email protected] ! I hope to have your vote in the upcoming election. Please remember to elect John Intoppa into the Medford Massachusetts School Committee!
